Synopsis
A sinister cult kidnaps a young girl, and sacrifice themselves by the light of the locust moon. The next morning the girl awakes, caked in dried blood and surrounded by corpses, but safe or so she thinks. Five years later, the locust moon is about to rise again and the girl is captured once more by a surviving member of the cult. She is taken to a remote cabin where she learns that a demon has been growing inside of her all these years, and before the dawn it will rise. In the end, she was unaware of the strange transformation that is about to happen.
Gore Factor
The Heretics is horror flick that stood out due to its extremely creepy and disturbing imagery combined with a quite unique cinematography. It is an all-out gory. The movie is dirty and horrible and like most horror films should look. There are a lot of terrifying figures, realistic bruises and scars, awesome demonic-like entities. This involves cults, suicides and demonic creatures.
The Grave Review
The Heretics (2017) is well directed and well crafted. It pretty much went into straight action and opting not to really go for a slow build. It involved a very good story and build up at a good pace.
The film managed to create some striking and fantastic imagery. The visual effects, which are mostly, if not all, practical look very impressive and realistic. The real highlight of the movie is the scare factor: once something happens to Gloria – especially to her body – the movie becomes very entertaining, fast-paced and a bit disturbing. Some disturbing sequences lean towards a disgusting/gut-wrenching outcome, but most of it is justified and, in a way, helps to set the film apart from shallow possession flicks. Body horror blends perfectly into a story based on satanic cults, evil entities and supernatural elements.
The main cast put in admirable performances. Although a small cast of characters, they all put out an impressive performance for their roles.
The Heretics is a brave film that could have gone horribly wrong but instead brings something a little bit different and original to the table.
Because of the foregoing reasons, Grave Reviews gives The Heretics (2017) three graves out of five graves.
