Fear Street Trilogy Gets First Teaser
Written By: GN
This July, audiences everywhere will get to unravel Shadyside’s dark history as the Netflix adaptation of R.L. Stine’s best selling 61-part horror fiction series Fear Street. The Leigh Janiak-helmed Fear Street Trilogy will be released in a span of three weeks starting from July 2.
Last May 19, the first teaser was released—giving us all a glimpse of the grisly thrills in store for us when July finally rolls around.
A history of horror
R.L. Stine’s teenage take on horror was bolder and bloodier than his other famous series, Goosebumps. Stine launched the series in 1989, eventually selling more than 80 million copies. The book series tackled the things that go bump in the night. Murderers, ghosts, vampires, aliens—you name it. Although set in the same universe and timeline, the characters change in every book.
The vast spooky world of Shadyside has spawned many classic titles such as The Prom Queen, Lights Out, and Dead End—cementing Fear Street’s place in the stratosphere of the 80s and 90s. However, aside from an ill-fated pilot episode in 1998, an adaptation never took off until 20th Century Fox started developing the film in 2015. Netflix eventually ended up acquiring the rights and expanded the film into a connected trilogy with Janiak and Phil Graziadei penning the script.
Spooky horror picture show
The one-minute trailer promises the same spine-tingling atmosphere of the books “in one killer story.” Spanning 300 years, the three stories follow the lives—and deaths—of Shadyside’s citizens as they discover the secrets that bind them together.
The first installment, Fear Street 1994, revolves around a group of teens who discover a “series of horrifying events” that lead to their town’s long-buried secret. The second part, Fear Street 1978, is set in Camp Nightwing, where campers and counselors must band together to solve a harrowing mystery. Capping the trilogy is Fear Street 1666’s revelation of the long-lasting horrors unleashed by a dangerous witch hunt.
It’s interesting to note that some elements of the trilogy seem to have been inspired by the novels’ storylines such as the similarities between Fear Street 1978’s camp mystery storyline and the 12th book in the series, Lights Out. Mentions of curses and witch hunts in Fear Street 1666 are also reminiscent of the spinoff book series Fear Street Sagas’ walk down memory lane.
There goes the neighborhood
The trilogy’s ensemble cast has a few familiar names in the mix. Gillian Jacobs (Community) is set to appear in both the 1994 and 1978 installments, while Stranger Things stars Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke are briefly featured in the trailer. Kiara Madeira, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, and Darrell Britt-Gibson also star.
Aside from the promising cast, the alluring combination of the trilogy’s rich source material and Director Leigh Janiak’s original twists is sure to put the Fear Street Trilogy on top of your must-watch list.
After the world premiere on July 2, viewers will only need to wait a week in between for the rest of the Fear Street Trilogy to drop on Netflix (1978 will air on July 9 while 1666 will be on July 16).
