Tomás Maldonado Cera was born in 1971 in Colombia. He lives in an old house in the Milagro sector south of Barranquilla. He started killing in 2002 and got his moniker “The Satanist” from his signature behavior of leaving satanic symbols on the bodies of the victims.
The Satanic Killings
Tomás’ killing spree started in 2002. The bodies of 7 victims were found from 2002 to 2004. He got away with them until 2018 when he was finally arrested.
Each of the victims had 2 fingers amputated which Tomás used to create satanic symbols on their body. He created the “Voor” symbol which means saying “I love Satan and I love Lucifer” and also used to summon demons. He also carved hexagrams and pentagrams on their skin which is a six-pointed and five-pointed star used in various occult rituals. Other satanic symbols were also found within the vicinity of where the corpses were discovered.
All the victims died of brutal blows to the head and multiple stab wounds and all of the murders happened in deserted places in Barranquilla. Residents were terrified because of these.
Relationship with the Victims
Tomás had several female victims and established relationships with them. One of them was Yilibeth Yirina Manjarrés Almarales. Even though Tomás was twice her age, he fell in love with her. His weirdness and stories about philosophers made Yilibeth love him back. There were even promises of marriage.
His last victim, Brenda Pajaro Bruno, was raped and killed after taking her disabled daughter to a rehabilitation center where Tomás was working as a driver. They were believed to be having a sexual affair based on evidences.
His first victim, Rolando Rufan Romero Romero, was one of his closest friends. They shared a different kind of friendship which led the authorities to think that Tomás might be homosexual. His other friends, Yeison Ariza Banquez, Roberto Antonio Bolano Ortega, and Miguel Alonso Gil Rodriguez, were also his victims. Some of them were reported to be part of the LGBT community.
Other victims include Aida Rocio Antolinez Lizarazo and 2 unnamed ones that have yet to be investigated.
Though Tomás is married and has 4 children, his behavior and relationships with the victims were questionable.
Eventual Capture
Tomás was arrested in his hometown of Barranquilla after authorities found evidences connecting him to Brenda Parajo Bruno’s body which was discovered in a woodland area. He was taken in El Bosque Prison after being charged with murder. After further investigation, he was linked to the other 6 victims.
After his arrest, he was linked to 2 more murders. All the 9 murders all had similar markings and amputations which raised the suspicion that Tomás was indeed a satanic serial killer in their small city.
Charges and Ongoing Trials
Based on the reports from the autopsy and the Barranquilla Metropolitan Police, the Prosecutor’s Office charged Tomás with murder, robbery, and rape. This is solely based on the findings on Brenda’s body and other evidences from security cameras, conversations, and information from cell phones, and witness statements.
Even though Tomás pleaded not guilty on these charges, the investigations are still ongoing with the other cases and he is yet to be charged. But in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, the prosecution has not yet filed the accusation. There are circulating news of his release because his criminal process is about to expire. Families of the victims are appealing to the authorities to expedite the process.
