Synopsis
The “Open House (2018)” started with the death of the father (Aaron Abrams) in the movie which then brings the decision for Naomi (Piercey Dalton) and Logan (Dylan Minnette) to move out to the house of Naomi’s sister in the woods due to financial instability. The house in woods is for sale and is holding Open Houses every Sunday morning until 5 pm which requires Logan and Naomi must not be around the house at those times. Something is definitely wrong inside the house, movements, and sounds happen as they were there. A strange woman Patricia Bethune as Martha that has Alzheimer’s disease introduced herself to Naomi and Logan in a very vague manner.
Eerie happenings such as a phone call that sounded like the echo of their voices, movement of things like Logan’s cereal bowl, shutting off the basement door. These events have brought an argument to mother and son. A misfortune
Gore Factor
There are very limited gore scenes. Blood is present only in a couple of scenes. There are a few deaths but not literally shown how they were killed. The sound effects are great that is why it leaves an expectation. The horror factor that this film has shown was the basement setting, multiple disturbance caused by the unseen stranger as well as the phone call that Naomi (Piercey Dalton mentioned sounded echoing the house.
The Grave Review
The Open House (2018) has plenty of opportunities that could make the film great since the actors are very talented, and it has an stunning setting, a huge house in the mountain and the best part was the dark basement which added chilling experience, unfortunately, the storyline lacks imagination and creativity. The story is half-baked and provides no intentions.
The Acting is acceptable, though Logan (Dylan Minnette) had so much intensity for the average film made it look a lot worse. Naomi (Piercey Dalton) as the mother lacks mastery in acting. The character of Martha played by Patricia Bethune shows insignificance she has obvious invalid appearances. Some characters included are vague with the absence of relevance.
The Open House (2018) is a frustrating, bland horror film and has bit of cliché. The whole point of them moving out did not give a bare minimum of justice to Brian Wallace’s death. It has plenty of loose ends, in fact, it did not explain who this man in boots is and why he is trying to make fun of them. Is it the same guy that killed Brian? And what is the reason of the killings?
Overall, Considerable actors, Exceptional setting but the lacking concept of the story. The movie had a chance but definitely did not shine.
For the following reasons, grave reviews give The Open House (2018) a two out of five graves.
