5. Saw 2 (2005)
Needle in a Hay Stack
When thinking of more mainstream Horror flicks, the Saw franchise is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. And for good reason! There are countless scenes from the Saw movies to choose from when thinking about atrocious and torturous moments. One scene from Saw 2 that many viewers find disturbing is the needle pit scene. In this scene, the group of victims find themselves trapped in a room unable to escape. There is a timer set on the wall counting down from four minutes. A recording is overheard stating that in order to escape from the room in time, someone must first retrieve the key and unlock the door. Jigsaw, the tormentor, also adds that this task should be as easy as “finding a needle in a haystack.” If you guessed a pit of needles as the location holding the key, you were right! One of the victims then removes a large white sheet revealing an enormous hole in the ground filled with thousands of used and dirty syringes. The victims hastily argue over who is to enter the pit. With time quickly diminishing, one of the male victims grabs one of the women and forcibly throws her into the pit. The unlucky victim, in absolute agony, desperately searches through the pool of sharp needles in order to find the key. With little time remaining, in a state of absolute shock, and with hundreds of needles penetrating deep into her body, she finally manages to locate the key and is pulled out from the pit of hell that is her fate.
4. Braindead (1993)
Its Raining Blood, Hallelujah its raining blood, oh woah woah
To stray away slightly from the more disturbing spectrum to a more comical side of things, Peter Jackson’s Braindead, also referred to as Dead Alive, has one of the goriest scenes ever recorded in terms of gallons of blood used per second. That’s right, this film holds the world record for most blood used in one scene. An astonishing 5 gallons of fake blood was used per second in a scene that involves a man, a lawnmower and an endless horde of zombies. From fingertips to limbs to heads to every anatomical body part imaginable, this iconic lawnmower scene supplies gore fans with an endless stream of blood and guts. One exceptionally silly part of this scene includes a raging zombie torso that attacks the protagonist by means of his viscera. As a means of defense from the rampant lawnmower blades, the torso manages to use his large intestines as a lasso that wraps around his foe’s neck. Luckily for the protagonist, he manages to chop up the remainder of the zombie in the nick of time. The scene ends with grossly exaggerated amounts of red goop enveloping the lawnmower, the surroundings and the protagonist himself.
3. The Human Centipede 2 (2011)
She did the Mash, She did the Baby Mash…
The Human Centipede 2 is a 2011 black and white sequel directed by Dutch filmmaker Tom Six. The Human Centipede 2 plays off the first film by using meta techniques in which the main protagonist attempts to recreate the events that occur in the first film through watching and analysing the actual film. The whole concept of bottom-to-mouth is disturbing in itself, however, one scene takes the cake for goriest scene. This scene ironically has nothing to do with the scat content that epitomizes the core theme of the films. The gruesome and shocking nature of this scene is saved for the very end while one of the victims attempts to escape. This helpless and pregnant victim manages to make her way out. However, unlucky for her, she is also in the midst of giving birth. As she manages to safely lock herself up in an escape car, her fetus, still attached by the umbilical cord, slides out of her. The naked, bloody woman, in pure agony, manages to get the key in the ignition and frantically steps on the gas pedal. Only to crush the fetus’ skull from the sheer pressure of her foot. This scene is quite a shocking one that catches you off guard and does not shy away from any of the gory, head-crushing details!
2. Antichrist (2009)
Have you ever watched the show, “Sex sent me to the ER”? Take that show and times it by 1000
What’s the goriest thing imaginable? Well if you ask most people, the answer would most likely involve genital mutilation. And this is exactly what we see in Lars Von Trier’s 2009 flick, Antichrist. Antichrist, staring Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg is a film that revolves around a couple who have just lost their only child. The couple’s retreat to a cabin in the woods ends up being more harmful than beneficial, both psychologically and physically. In this particular scene near the end of the film, the woman, who is only referred to as “She,” commences a physical altercation with her husband who is similarly only referred to as “He.” As She has him pinned to the floor, she reaches into his pants, removes his penis and begins to stimulate it. She then bludgeons the appendage with a large wooden log. Von Trier doesn’t shy away at all from full frontal male nudity, something we scarcely see in cinema, as we are exposed to her husband’s fully erect penis. She then begins to violently masturbate him until he ejaculates a stream of red blood. This scene is only the tip of the iceberg. What follows is bound to make anyone, especially women, cringe. She then uses her husband’s fingers to pleasure herself and soon after grabs a large pair of razor-sharp scissors. Afterwards, she opens her legs exposing her vagina and the camera zooms in on her clitoris. She then places the open scissors on her swollen clitoris and in one swift movements snips it off entirely. Antichrist is a rather artistic film that juxtaposes pain with pleasure, BDSM with love. If you are brave enough to sit through this tortuous scene, be assured that you will never look at a pair of scissors the same way!
1. A Serbian Film (2010)
Hey! Watch where you stick that thing!
The infamous Serbian Film, a 2010 flick directed by Srdan Spasojevic is known to many as possibly the most disturbing horror film to date. It is banned in several countries due to its overly graphic sexual violence and taboo subject matter. Many of the violent and shocking scenes, although extremely graphic, are perhaps slightly more psychologically disturbing than visually gory. When trying to think of the most disturbing scene from the film, many scenes come to mind. However, there is one scene that definitely takes the cake. Milos, the protagonist, is forcibly administered drugs against his will. We are not made privy as to what kind of drugs are being given to him, however, from his violent and manic behavior, we can assume that perhaps a mix of adrenaline and Viagra are being administered. Milos, completely naked and with a fully erect penis is brought into an old warehouse. Inside the warehouse lays two sedated figures lay naked with sheets hiding their identities. From the size of one of the bodies, we can tell that the smaller individual is merely a child. Milos violently begins penetrating the unconscious adult before moving onto the child. As he forcibly enters the child, blood begins to stream down the infant’s thighs. While Milos is still raping the child, the identities of the individuals are disclosed. The sheets are removed, and, to his dismay, Milos discovers that he has just raped his wife and six-year-old son. In a fit of pure rage, Milos begins attacking the men involved. He manages to bash one’s head in and shoot the other two. Finally, Milos is faced with his final foe, a man with only one eye. Milos plunges his erect penis deep into the man’s empty eye socket, killing him instantly.
To be fair, there are an ample number of other horror films that display graphic and disturbing imagery. The following list was composed with great difficulty. We encourage others to share their thoughts on what you think the goriest scenes are in horror history.
