Orson Welles famously once said, “We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone.” The point is driven home by the eyes and thoughts of the character Jared, in the 2017 psychedelic film, Streamer. Directed by Toronto-based filmmakers, Jared Bratt and Vincent Pun, Streamer is a psychedelic film about a man named Jared (played by Jared Bratt), who is struggling with his inner demons and frustrated with the pain and suffering that life offers. When Jared learns that a webcam girl (Played by Tanya Lee) lives in the same building, he starts to befriend her in a rather uncomfortable way. When the two become acquainted, Jared’s mind fills in the rest of his experience with this young woman leaving his sanity behind.
Jared’s loneliness creates a sense of struggle between what he knows to be real and what he desires to be real. Streamer combines the imagination of films like American Psycho and the struggle of finding tranquility like Into the Wild. Sometimes the most horrific and torturous experiences are simply feeling unwanted and defeated. In this way, Streamer brings a very real and very common situation to life. Upon viewing the film, I could relate to many of the situations that were depicted. Streamer is certainly a film that you should see.
Streamer began as a short film in 2013 and took on several revisions over the years. Along with revisions to the storyline, actors who were previously in the film had since relocated. Both Bratt and Pun took it upon themselves to not only find new actors but also, Bratt would audition for the part himself. Having a personal connection with the story, it was Bratt who would play himself in the new feature film, Streamer, and do it exceedingly well at that.
The film has had tremendous success thus far, earning the Best Drama Award in 2017 at the Hollywood Verge Film Festival. Streamer is also scheduled to appear in Los Angeles at the Concrete Dream Film Festival on June 15th and 16th, 2018 for a two-day screening.
Tickets for the upcoming screening can be bought HERE.
