About the Creator
Recently, I spoke to Mariana Oliver, a special effects (SFX) designer, born and raised Southwest of Lajas, Puerto Rico. Mariana is currently attending the University of Puerto Rico and is studying plastic artistry and design. She has been creating various designs for about three years.
Mariana first started to become engaged in FX design when her grandfather would tell her stories with great detail. In addition, Mariana stated that her grandfather would say things like “if you run in front of a car you will be crushed by it and he would give you this graphic image.” The way Mariana got started in design was during a class whereupon she started drawing with a red pen on herself. She noticed that her classmates were asking her things like, “what happened to your finger.” As a result, Mariana started to explore this area and began looking up videos on how to create various designs. Furthermore, Mariana has used a variety of household items to mimic the designs as seen in this article.
Since then, Mariana has collaborated with various people on Instagram and has even been involved in short-films, such as the film, Yellow, which was produced while attending the University of Puerto Rico. To date, one of Mariana’s most enjoyable pieces has been replicating a shark bite to the leg. She hopes to take her fx design abilities and apply them to TV shows and other entertainment platforms.
We wish Mariana the very best in her career and we are excited to see what other great creations she comes up with. Further, for a complete portfolio of Mariana’s works, you can click here.
