Johnny The Homicidal Maniac – A Glimpse Back at the Dark Comic

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (JTHM) is a short-series, dark-humor comic created by author, Jhonen Vasquez. The series lasted from August 1995 to January 1997 and there was a total of 7 issues released.
JTHM is about a murdering, demented, man named Johnny C. (Aka Nny) who has lost touch with reality and expresses his feelings through violent acts. The comic depicts hundreds of people getting murdered or tortured. Some would say, JTHM, is more about someone who is trying to understand himself and find fulfillment. Nny is often fighting with his emotions and has created other twisted characters that act as his self-conscience in various ways. The characters he creates engage in dialogue with each other and can be viewed as Nny’s thoughts fighting with each other. Some of characters named are Nailbunny and Psychodoughboy. In addition to the ultra-violent murders, the story also contains very subtle moments of humor that is a nice change from the morbid acts and ideas of Nny.
The series stopped being published rather quickly and has not seen the day of light in some time. I remember when the series’ first came out, it was very difficult to find the comics because they were sold out at all the comic stores. Currently, you can get the single comic books used and new from Amazon. The cheapest single comics may range anywhere from 15-40 dollars. However, the paperback which is a collection of all the comics can still be purchased new at approximately $20. I enjoyed the series as a young adult and still occasionally will revisit the stories. I recommend giving this story a read if you want to explore the dark mind of Nny.
To date, the author, Vasquez, has expressed no interest in continuing the series. Vasquez subsequently continued his publications; many would know him for his series, Invader Zim on Nickelodean.
