Early Life
Mohammed Bijeh, who was known as Muhammad Basjee, was born into a big family on February 7, 1982. His mother died when he was 4 years old and his father remarried immediately. In total, he had six brothers and six half-brothers. His father was cruel and barbaric, and used to chain his legs during his childhood.
Aside from the physical abuse and beatings, Bijeh’s father forced him to stop schooling and start working at the tender age of 11. He worked at a furnace where he was raped multiple times as a child.
Bijeh’s early life with a violent father, lack of a mother figure, and the sexual abuse he experienced from society led him to become a serial killer later on in his adult life.
The Crimes
Bijeh’s traumatic experiences during his childhood motivated him to commit acts of crime. He believed that he should do to others what was done to him.
Bijeh’s modus operandi was to lure young boys to the desert to hunt animals. His murder method was a blow to the head with a stone followed by sexual abuse. He would then bury the dead bodies in the shallow desert sand together with other dead animals. This earned him the moniker Desert Vampire.
Arrest
Bijeh was arrested on September 14, 2004 and confessed to raping and murdering 16 to 18 young boys in a span of 6 months. He also said that if he was not arrested, he would continue to kill 100 children. He had his trials in October which became violent and had to be stopped because family members of his victims tried to attack him during his testimony, causing stampede.
Bijeh had an accomplice named Ali Baghi, but was only sentenced with 100 lashes and 15 years of imprisonment for taking part in some of the kidnappings.
On November 27, Bijeh was sentenced to be executed by hanging for murder and 100 lashes for rape.
Death or Current Whereabouts
Bijeh’s public execution was performed on March 16, 2005 in front of around 5,000 people. He was given 100 lashes on his bare back and was hanged by a noose afterwards.
During the whipping, one victim’s family member managed to get past the barbed wire security, broke through the riot police, and stabbed Bijeh. He did not cry in pain and managed to be silent all throughout, but collapsed thrice. Some onlookers also managed to throw stones at him.
After 100 lashes, a mother of one of the victims did the honor of putting the rope around Bijeh’s neck for the hanging. He was hoisted up in the air through a crane about 10 meters high and people watched for 20 minutes until he was confirmed dead.
