Light As A Feather
Anticipated Release Date: October 4, 2019
TV Show similar to: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, It Follows
Light as a Feather is one of the upcoming TV horror shows which is a teen supernatural thriller and is a Hulu original. I initially dismissed it as a show for a younger audience, but it has tons of creepy and genuinely scary moments. The story follows McKenna, a teen girl, who lost her twin sister two years prior. After a prank gone wrong, McKenna and her three best friends invite the new girl in town, Violet, to a graveyard pregame party where Violet suggests they play Light as a Feather. In this version of the game, the storyteller describes how the person being lifted will die. Shortly after playing the game, tragedy begins to strike members of the group. Light as a Feather is a fun show that packs an emotional punch. It deals with heavy themes like loss, PTSD, and the bonds of friendship. Currently, there are 18 episodes streaming on Hulu, with season 2B premiering October 4.
Los Espookys
Anticipated Release Date: Season 2 announced but not known, possibly 2020
TV Show similar to: What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Concords
Los Espookys is a Spanish-language horror comedy on HBO. It follows a group of friends living in Mexico City who decide to make a business out of scaring people. Renaldo is the slightly naïve leader. Ursula is the taskmaster who also builds much of the contraptions Los Espookys use to fool people. Andres is a chocolate company heir in a loveless relationship with his shallow boyfriend. And Tati is the sometimes completely incompetent, sometimes profound sister of Ursula. Together they are hired to do things like stage an exorcism and pretend-kidnap a US Ambassador using a fake (but actually real) cursed mirror. What sets Los Espookys apart are its oddities; peculiar characters like the affected Andres who surrounds himself with royal blue everything and the fact that it’s written and directed by native Spanish speakers but made for an American network. The idea for the show came from SNL alum Fred Armisen, but the six episode first season is written almost entirely by Julio Torres (Andres) and Ana Fabrega (Tati). Los Espookys was just picked up for a second season and you can watch it on HBO, HBO Go, or HBO Now.
You
Anticipated Release Date: Late 2019
TV Show similar to: Gossip Girl, Dexter
You is not traditional horror, but rather a rom-com modern love story turned dark. You Joe, a handsome loner who works at a bookstore where he meets Guinevere Beck, a captivating if flawed aspiring poet looking for love in New York City. Joe will stop at nothing to make this meet-cute turn into a full-fledged relationship, even if it means murder. What makes You stand out is how it fully immerses you into Joe’s psyche. Through voiceovers, you get a sense of how he thinks about people, specifically women, and its terrifying because he’s not an obvious monster. Season 1 of You is streaming on Netflix, with the second season premiering sometime in 2019, also on Netflix.
Mindhunter
Anticipated Release Date: Currently streaming as of August 16, 2019
TV Show similar to: House of Cards, Criminal Minds
Another horror-adjacent show worth a watch is Netflix’s Mindhunter. Set in the 1970s, the show tells the true-ish story of two FBI agents and a professor who pioneered criminal profiling and formed what became the Behavioral Analysis Unit. In season 1, the agents tour the country, interviewing and analyzing real-life serial killers to identify patterns that may help law enforcement find suspects. They meet with Richard Speck, who broke into a dormitory and systemically raped and murdered eight nursing students in one night; Jerry Brudos, who began stalking and beating women as a teen before eventually killing four women and having sex with their corpses; and Ed Kemper, who buried his family’s cat alive and went on to murder ten people including his mother and grandparents. Mindhunter is a standout due to its hyperreal period setting and phenomenal acting. The young upstart half of the FBI due is played by Jonathan Groff, a Tony award winning actor best known for musical theater. In this, his understated, slightly sociopathic performance strikes contrast to his earlier roles. The breakout star, though, is Cameron Britton who plays Ed Kemper with disturbing accuracy. Britton even earned an Emmy nomination for his role and will be coming back for season 2, which takes place in the early 1980s and focuses on the Atlanta Child Murders. Catch season 2 streaming on Netflix on August 16.
Lovecraft Country
Anticipated Release Date: Sometime in 2020
TV Show similar to: The Twilight Zone, Get Out, Helix
Lovecraft Country is currently shooting its first season that will air on HBO in 2020. Named after a 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country is a novel about Atticus Black, a young man who goes on a road trip across the US with his uncle George and friend Letitia. Together they travel through a racially divided 1950s Jim Crow America in search of Atticus’s missing father. They face many dangers along the way. Some are grounded in reality, like the rampant racism present in the country. They also encounter surreal, otherworldly creatures that belong in a Lovecraft novel. Lovecraft is known for his unique style of fantasy horror that focused on fear of the unknown. He was also a white supremacist who believed that black people were subhuman. Lovecraft Country will no doubt highlight the racist undertones in Lovecraft’s work. The show’s creators are Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and Micha Green (Underground, Helix). Peele’s ability to blend horror and social commentary and Green’s experience with creepy science fiction and historical African American stories make the perfect combination to bring Lovecraft Country to life.
