3. Earthbound (1995)
Earthbound, released for Super Nintendo in 1995 and was not well received until several years later. Earthbound revolves around four boys a boy named, Ness, Paul, Jeff, and Poo. In this role-playing game, your goal is to travel from town to town to gain power so you can eventually defeat the evil forces that are draining the earth.
There is one scene where you play as Poo, who dreams about climbing a mountain. At the top of the mountain, you encounter a ghost who asks you questions as to whether the ghost can strip you of your limbs. In order to complete the level, you must answer “Yes” to all the ghosts’ questions. The ghost says he will break your legs, tear off your arms, take away your hearing, take away your sight until all that is left is your mind. When he takes away your sight, the screen turns black and all you see is the words from the ghost. This game brings the concept of torture to kids at an early age. This moment in the game reminds me of the movie “Hostel,” which is a film revolving around people’s desires to torture others.
