Raul Julia (The Addams Family)
It is hard not to see Gomez Addams from The Addams Family (1991) and The Addams Family Values (1993) when you think of Raul Julia. One of the most iconic roles of his career, he masterfully played the demented, kind-hearted husband and father to this crazy family. His role and perception cannot be matched. His upbeat and wayward style was perfect for The Addams Family films. It would be hard to imagine anyone else for the role.
Raul Julia was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 9, 1940. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Puerto Rico. After obtaining his degree, he had taken up acting as a profession and soon thereafter moved to New York to continue his acting career. He had performed in several on and off-Broadway plays and soon started to receive major film roles including the video game film, Street Fighter (1994).
In the early months of 1994, Julia had undergone stomach surgery due to severe food poisoning. Thereafter, Julia’s health started to deteriorate, although, despite his health conditions, Julia continued to act in films. On October 16 of that year, Julia started to feel weak and suffered a stroke. He was rushed to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island (NY) that day. While at the hospital, he fell into a coma and a few days later passed away. Julia died on October 24, 1994. He was 54 years old. Days later, funerals were held in his honor in Puerto Rico, New York, and California. That is why Raul Julia is in our Top Five Real Deaths Series.
