From the producers of The Walking Dead comes the slasher-film Hell Fest (released on September 28, 2018). If you’re looking for your next Michael Myers or Jason film franchise, you may, unfortunately, be disappointed.
Hell Fest is about six friends who venture to a horror-themed festival. Filled with horror mazes, haunts, high-tech animatronics and scary actors roaming around, one cannot think that they are in Six Flag Great Adventure or another theme park. In fact, my reaction was correct as Six Flags is offering a haunted maze for this year’s Fright Nights at their theme park premised on the film…and the marketing award goes to….

CHECK OUT THOSE KICKS
As the six friends roam through the “festival,” one of the girls named Natalie notices that someone who appears to be an actor is stalking them. After some time, the truth is revealed that there is a killer lurking in the park. Interestingly, the only feature that the girl identifies the killer with is his shoes, rather than the disfigured mask. In fact, I liked the shoes so much, I was wondering if they were Timberland. But, you cannot help but root for the killer, because all the actors were unlikeable.
The premise of Hell Fest is not original as we have seen other films with similar plots, such as The Funhouse Massacre, The Houses October Built and Eli Roth’s short-film, Chainsaw, which all have a theme of haunted attractions gone wrong. But Hell Fest does offer some other scary elements. The biggest reaction I had to this film was when the six friends were waiting on line to get on a haunted ride and the wait was 45 MINUTES! AHHH. Nevertheless, seeing the strobe lighting and the expensive props throughout the film was aesthetically pleasing.
THE WAIT IS REAL!!
As a fan of haunted attractions, I enjoyed viewing the environments and the kind of designs that were placed in this movie. To that end, I appreciated how much effort was placed in creating and designing the scenes. Despite the poor acting and cliché villain, I denote two graves to this film for a good effort.
