In the Mouth of Madness (1994), directed by John Carpenter, is about an investigator, John Trent (played by Sam Neill), who is tasked to seek out the author of a famous horror series. What he soon discovers is that he is the living the stories of these books. The film works on so many different levels and it’s one of those films that can be viewed from many different perspectives. Sam Neill is brilliant as our protagonist, John Trent. Further, Neill’s performance drives home the concept of losing one’s sanity.
The Grave Review
In respect to the character, John Trent is a well-developed character and is introduced as a very logical, practical but cynical man based upon his investigatory profession. Trent’s ability to uncover a con turns this horror film into a tragedy as we watch the mental destruction of Trent as he tries so hard to keep his grip on reality. What is interesting is that many of the references in this film relate back to the stories and concepts of tales by H.P. Lovecraft. As an avid reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this element of the film. Personally, I found nothing wrong with the film, I loved every second of it and, I imagine, I will watch it many more times in the future. Further, Carpenter proves, yet again, that he is truly a master of horror with In the Mouth of Madness.
