Slender Man

Slender Man, an extremely tall, thin man with long arms and no face, developed a cult following when Creator, Eric Knudsen created the creepy, stick-like figure. Slender Man which can be found in folk stories, is a mythical-like character which typically haunts children or young adults. What is interesting about the Slender Man stories is that they typically do not portray any sort of graphic violence or gore.
Similarities to an Old German Composition – Erlkonig
When I was I was in college, I took a music history class as an elective studying the different periods of music. I also grew up with a musical family so it made sense to take the class. The Slender Man in many ways reminds me of the monologue composition called Erlkonig, which is German for The Elf King. The composition was composed by Franz Schubert in 1815. The Elf King is about a Father and Son who are riding a horse in the woods.
During their ride through the woods, the Son discovers that the Elf King has spotted him and tries to tell his Father that something is trying to take him away. The Father, oblivious to this, ignores the Son and tells him not to worry. In the end, the Elf King takes the boy’s life and the Father is left with a child motionless in his arms. This is a song that is sung by one person in different voices. In this case, the singer is voicing the Elf King, the Father and the Son. It delivers a very powerful composition and message.

Media Trouble
On May 31, 2014, two young 12-year girls in Waukesha, Wisconsin allegedly stabbed a classmate 19 times in the woods. The classmate managed to crawl to the road where she was seen by a cyclist and managed to survive. When questioned by authorities, the two girls allegedly made statements about trying to impress Slender Man and/or committing a murder so Slender Man wouldn’t get them. Both girls were charged as adults with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Bail was set in the amount of $500,000. Reports indicate that the victim was “one millimeter away” from death.
There was an extensive amount of deliberation on whether the two girls were mentally fit to stand trial. Eventually, the judge ruled that both girls were, in fact, fit to stand trial. In August and September of 2017, it was reported one girl pled to attempted second-degree homicide and the other girl pled to attempt to commit first-degree homicide. However, the arrangement of each plea deal was set up so that the girls would not go to jail. They would, however, spend 3 additional years in a mental hospital where the two girls had already been for the last 2 years.
Many reports now refer to this case as the Slender Man Stabbing or a similar title.
The Horror Video Game, Slenderman
The character generated popular mini-games online such as “Slender: The Eight Pages.” Although this character may not look like much, the popularity of this mini-game has frightened many of its players (especially when played in the dark). Often times, when a character is captured, the screen may become fuzzy or go completely dark, keeping the audience curious what happened to the character. There have also been several adaptations of the game since then.

The trend for media attention for Slender Man has prompted a movie to be produced. The movie is produced by Mythology Entertainment and MadHouse Entertainment. The movie is expected to be released in May of 2018.
