And they said it was for kids?
The not so kid-friendly parts of some kid-friendly games. Here is a list of 5 scary moments in children’s video games that I believe to be some of the scariest moments in children’s video games. I have rated them from scariest (#1) to least scary (#5)
5. Mario 64 (1996)
One of the first games for Nintendo 64 was a huge success. It was fun, colorful and overall a happy game. As we are all familiar with, you have to save Princess Peach who gets kidnapped for the 100th time. You start as Mario and have to explore the castle until you reach the top. To progress in the game, you must collect as many stars as possible in each level. The way you play each level is to jump into picture frames which are scattered throughout the castle.
There is one level located at the bottom of the castle, which is the ghost level. The way to enter this level is to enter the gardens of the castle and jump into a little merry-go-round like toy box. Setting the stage with eerie carnival music, the level is full of traps, slashing pianos, eyes that follow you and of course ghosts. But the most horrifying part of this level is when you enter the rotating merry-go-round. As you get closer to this room, the carnival music gets louder and replicates sounds that could come from a phonograph. Although it wouldn’t rate as a terrifying level, taken as a whole, the level is not one you would play before bed.
