The Evil Within, a horror survival game, released for the PC and majority of the gaming platforms in late 2014 is seeing a sequel this year, October 13, 2017. Developed by Tango Gameworks and Bethesda and directed by Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami, this game in my opinion has been underrated. The story is convoluted, however, the aesthetics of the game are stunning.
The Evil Within is about a detective named Sebastian Castellanos, who is investigating the horrific slaughter of residents, nurses and physicians at the Beacon Mental Hospital. Upon arrival, Sebastian is swallowed into a twisted nightmare facing gruesome creatures and decayed bosses. Often times, he must use his environment to survive and sometimes his best option simply is to run away from the danger. It is unclear at this point whether Sebastian is merely seeing hallucinations or whether they are real. We find out as we progress in the game that an individual by the name of Ruvik is controlling these experiences by what he calls STEM, a machine which links all brains together leaving him with the ability to manipulate the mind. The game is designed is various chapters. Towards the final chapter, you eventually defeat Ruvik or what appears to be a victory. Afterwards, you wake up in a bathtub and it turns out that you may have been a victim of STEM this entire time. Further, there is a hint that Ruvik has returned and ready to continue his mission with STEM.
In The Evil Within 2, Sebastian re-enters the STEM system as he had been in the first game. According to the teaser trailer, Sebastian had lost his daughter, Lilly earlier on, and he is told that his daughter is still alive trapped in the STEM system. We may be seeing a completely new story or a continuation of the first game. There also has been no mention whether the original villain, Ruvik, will be making an appearance. However, it would be valuable to fill in all the vague and missing information that we didn’t receive in the first game.
The Evil Within 2 will be hitting shelves on October 13, 2017 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. As of this post, the Bethesda store, is charging $60.00 USD for pre-orders. The pre-order will include some additional in-game weapon content (only available to the USA).
If you enjoy horror games, The Evil Within in worth a play through, simply for its well thought-out environments and grotesque creatures. In addition, if the sequel is anything like the first game, I am anticipating an equally enjoyable game.
